Digital vs Printed Invitations: An Honest Comparison
We build digital invitations for a living, and we still think there are cases where you should print. Here is the honest breakdown.

You will hear two extreme positions. One says printed cards are a wasteful relic. The other says a digital invitation is disrespectful to elders. Both are wrong, and most couples end up doing a version of the same sensible thing.
Where digital wins outright
- Cost. A good printed card runs Rs. 150–400 each. Four hundred guests is a car's worth of paper.
- Speed. Design changes take seconds instead of a reprint cycle.
- Reach. Relatives in Dubai, Toronto and Manchester receive it the same second as your neighbour.
- Corrections. Wrong venue on a printed card is a catastrophe. On a link, it is a two-minute fix.
- RSVPs. Printed cards cannot count themselves.
- Memory. The link is still live on your first anniversary, wishes and all.
Where print still earns its place
There is a category of guest for whom a physical card is not decoration but respect. Grandparents. Your father's oldest friend. The family your parents have known for forty years. For these people, someone should arrive at their door with a card and a box of mithai.
The approach most couples land on
- 1
Print 30 to 60 cards
For elders, close family, and the handful of relationships where a physical card carries weight.
- 2
Send the digital invitation to everyone
Including the people who got a printed card — they will use the link for the map and the timings.
- 3
Run RSVPs entirely through the link
Even printed-card recipients get the URL by WhatsApp. One source of truth for your headcount.
This cuts printing costs by roughly 85%, keeps the traditions that matter intact, and gives you a real guest list. Nobody is offended, and nobody is guessing.
The environmental footnote
Four hundred printed invitations, with envelopes and inserts, is somewhere around 12kg of paper. It is not the biggest lever in a wedding's footprint — the catering is — but it is the easiest one to pull.
